Deerlick has 3 bathrooms, with sink, shower & flush toilets and hot & cold running water. (#1 on map).
There is a large (40’ x 40’) pavilion with a cement floor, with picnic tables and a propane B-B-Q. (#2 on map); and a small cabin that is used for a warm-up building. (#3 on map).
The AAC building (upper left on map) is 20’ x 30’ is finished inside and has an AC/heater unit and several portable heaters.
All buildings have electricity but only the washrooms have running water. There is a microwave and dorm size fridge in both Building #3 and the AAC building.
Electricity can be pulled off the pavilion, the AAC building or the fence that runs along the road. (Normally it is reserved only to run telescopes & laptops. However, on this night ONLY, if the night is very cold and no one is using power for observing, you are permitted to plug in heaters.)
Tents can be set up anywhere on the field. Vehicles are permitted anywhere on the field, except in front of the washrooms where the septic tank is located. However, for safety reasons, you CANNOT idle engines anywhere near the tents.
The AAC building can be used as a sleeping room – there is a sofa bed and lots of floor space for sleeping bags.
Free Coffee and Hot Chocolate will be available in Building #2 all night.
The DAV was developed by a consortium of local area astronomers and AAC members. The 97 acre property is located off I-20, Exit 154, near Crawfordville, GA 30631 in Talliaferro County – one of the darkest areas within a 2 hour drive from Atlanta.
The DAV membership field, called Grier’s Field in honor of the prominent 19th Century Georgia astronomer Robert Grier, is a private facility. Use of the field requires an annual membership fee and a nightly camping fee.
For more information or to get a membership, go to:
The AAC owns a 2 acre lot in the north-east corner of the field and has built a warm-up building with electricity and AC/heating for our members use.
The lower properties have been sold or leased as private lots for
observatories and/or homes.
